Hurricane Ian may affect how you contact 811

Much of Florida is being impacted by Hurricane Ian and one thing is certain, our member utilities have a big job prepping for this event’s impending outages and clean up.

The Underground Facility Damage Prevention and Safety Act, Chapter 556, Florida Statutes, offers member utilities a break during these times called Extraordinary Circumstances. It basically relieves members from having to locate and mark their facilities within the statutory timeframe due to extraordinary working conditions.

In general, Sunshine 811 will follow these procedures before and after hurricanes. Any changes will be assessed by staff after the storm has passed.

  • When a hurricane watch is issued for Volusia County or the surrounding Central Florida area, Sunshine 811 will continue taking calls.

  • When a hurricane warning is issued for Volusia County or the Central Florida area, Sunshine 811 will be unable to take telephone calls. In the meantime, request tickets, verify utility responses and look up member utility emergency contact information online using Exactix. IRTHNet will be available for member use.

  • Visit the Extraordinary circumstance declarations page to see which members have declared.

  • We will resume telephone operations the first business day after the storm has passed and it is safe to travel.

  • The center may offer extended and weekend hours to assist its member utilities in their recovery efforts.
