811 Day: One Call Saves Lives

Before You Dig, Make the Call. Cut the Risk. Not the Line.

Every August 11, Sunshine 811 joins damage prevention organizations, utility companies, contractors, excavators and homeowners across the country to recognize 811 Day - a national annual awareness day to remind the public that safe digging starts with a call or click to 811.

Whether you're planting a tree, installing a fence, building a deck or breaking ground on a major construction project, contacting 811 before digging is the easiest way to protect yourself, your community and the underground utility infrastructure we all depend on.

Millions of miles of buried utility lines run beneath our communities, including electric, gas, water, sewer and telecommunications.

Many of these lines are located just a few inches below the surface, and lines can move around with shifting soil. Digging without knowing what lies underground can lead to service disruptions, costly repairs, injuries or even fatalities.

811 Day serves as an important reminder that a simple step taken before digging can prevent serious consequences.
