Hurricanes mean special procedures in 811 process

When Sunshine 811 is in the path of a hurricane, it may not be open for members and excavators in other parts of the state. To be best prepared, please use the following as a guideline:

  • When a hurricane watch is issued for Volusia County, Sunshine 811 will continue taking calls.

  • When a hurricane warning is issued for Volusia, we will not take calls from members or excavators. Sunshine 811’s irth and irthNet systems will remain functioning as long as the call center is unaffected by the storm. If there is damage or some type of system outage, staff will not be able to assess anything until the storm has passed.

  • We will provide updates on our storm feed, Twitter and Facebook as we are able to do so.

  • If the call center is not damaged, it will re-open at 7 a.m. the first business day after the storm, provided it is safe for employees to travel.

  • The center may offer extended and weekend hours to assist its members with recovery.

For Member Utilities

  1. When Sunshine 811 is in the path of a hurricane, please refer to the bullet points above.

  2. Members with facilities in the affected area should follow these recommendations:

  • Verify the accuracy of your emergency and catastrophic contact information. Update it by completing this form.

  • Declare extraordinary circumstances before the hurricane hits. Use the online form; email your member name and code; or call 811 and select option 3.

Note for Excavators

When a member utility declares extraordinary circumstances, excavators will be informed when the ticket is processed. The positive response summary will show code 3T Unmarked, “Extraordinary circumstances (EC) per s.556.105(8)(a) exist; call utility owner/operator provider for this location. Excavation site is unmarked."
