Hurricane Elsa Sets Eyes On Florida
As Floridians prepare for weekend barbeques and Independence Day celebrations, we keep our eyes to the south and the first hurricane of the season, Hurricane Elsa.
Most of Florida is in the cone of uncertainty but one thing is certain, our member utility companies have a big job prepping for this event, ensuring they have enough staff to handle major outages and all things that go along with storm damage.
The Underground Facility Damage Prevention and Safety Act, Chapter 556, Florida Statutes, offers member utilities a break during these times called Extraordinary Circumstances. It basically relieves members from having to locate and mark their facilities within the statutory timeframe due to extraordinary working conditions.
In general, Sunshine 811 will follow these procedures before and after hurricanes. Any changes will be assessed by staff after the storm has passed.
When a hurricane watch is issued for Volusia County, Sunshine 811 will continue taking calls.
When a hurricane warning is issued for Volusia, we will not take calls from members or excavators.
Excavators may continue requesting tickets online with Exactix 24x7.
The center will re-open for business at 7 a.m. the first business day after the storm.
The center may offer extended and weekend hours to assist its members with recovery
